Yummy Gummy Latex announces closure of business

There are few latex clothing designers within the industry who have had a greater impact and profound influence on the direction and availability of latex fashion than that of Yummy Gummy Latex. In the ten years since it was formed, the brand has played a major role in popularising latex and changing perceptions amongst the public. It was therefore extremely sad to hear that company owner, Rebecca Allsop, has taken the difficult decision to close the business.

UK-based Yummy Gummy Latex began trading back in 2013 and quickly became well known for its hand-poured sheeting production process, the material from which latex clothing is made, and which resulted in latex with a wide variety of unique, eye-catching and multi-coloured effects such as glitter colours, marbled latex, a huge range of textured latex, print-effect, and many many other patterns. With this production process in place it meant that every single roll produced was unique and that no two sheets would be identical or uniform. The brands unique approach to latex production earned them huge recognition in the industry and a loyal customer base.

As well as the manufacture of latex sheeting, Yummy Gummy also branched out and produced a hugely successful ready-to-wear clothing range too which encompassed collections for both men and women, as well as taking on custom orders. Featuring classically cut garments such as dresses, skirts, jumpsuits, tops and trousers Yummy Gummy continued their huge contribution to the extending the world of latex clothing.

As the growth of the latex sheeting business continued with it came an increase in options, styles and variety. Rebecca’s material designs were picked up by designers and other clothing manufacturers including Dayne Henderson and Vex Clothing which allowed Yummy Gummy to be showcased on the public stage as the brands latex was worn by celebrities such as Lady Gaga and Megan Thee Stallion.

With catwalk appearances at worldwide events such as the German Fetish Ball and Sexhibition (including being worn by Netflix star and actress Sukki Singapora who spoke about wearing Yummy Gummy during our interview last year) Rebecca’s business continued to grow and expand into new horizons.

Yummy Gummy was also a regular attendee at events such as Birmingham Bizarre Bazaar and Le Boutique Bazaar which provided the opportunity for newcomers of latex fashion to get up close to the material, ask questions, try on garments – an approach which no doubt helped to extend to the reach and admiration of latex clothing.

Farewell Yummy Gummy

With the publishing of an emotional farewell video on her Instagram profile at the end of January 2023, Rebecca announced the closure of Yummy Gummy:

An official statement on the brands website read “With much gratitude and many tears I have made the difficult decision to close Yummy Gummy Sheet Latex. I may still have some one off clothes as I use up the last of my sheet stock with my clothing maker, but I won’t be taking any more orders and shall be contacting customers that have open orders.”

Rebecca continued with an explanation of why she had come to this difficult decision, “This has been a long time coming. I am moving on to the next chapter of my life and I’ve been trying to do too much in the last year and something has to give. I need to take back my mind space so I can move forward. The final nail in the coffin was the cold snap in December which froze and denatured my stock of liquid latex. I wanted to close my sheet latex soonish and keep the clothing going, but because of the denatured latex I have made the difficult decision to not buy more liquid latex so that I can concentrate on my diploma and new projects.”

A clearly emotional Allsop continued to thank those who had supported her and her business over the years, “Thank you so much for the good times, the trust you had in me and my product. The fashion shows, the clothing collections, the markets, the party’s, the events, everyone that bought things and the ones that just wanted to try latex on for the first time. To Latex101 for believing in my product, becoming my first large customer and then going on to make my clothing collections until Beth Parkin took over. I wouldn’t have been who I became with out that first support. I’m so lucky and fortunate to have spent 10 years in this industry. I opened a business in my 20’s and you guys supported me into a roaring success. To LatexFashionTV for filming my shows and shoots and events and generally being a real sound dude, following my journey and supporting so many small burgeoning latex businesses. And to the Birmingham Bizarre for always having me and giving me a space to sell my clothes. And lastly and not leastly, my long suffering friends and family, so standing by me, helping me out at markets, loading and unloading the car. And special mention to my dad, who without, I would have never gotten off the ground or this far. Helping me spend thankless hours fine tuning these tables and working for me for a year or two.” Rebecca signed off with the a final thans, “Thank you so much, each and every one of you.”

Highly respected latex designers and brands such as TheLatexBaroness (who also closed her latex clothing business in 2021), Queen Troll and Vivishine rallied around the announcement and offered their gratitude and well-wishes:

Despite its recent closure, the brand’s influence and impact on the industry will be remembered by its fans and customers. The company’s legacy will live on in all the designers and brands which Yummy Gummy encouraged to start their own journey and thanks to Rebecca has left a lasting impact on the latex clothing industry.

Whilst we’ll be sorry to see them go, we wish Rebecca the best of luck in all her future endeavours. Keep on shining!
