Having been featured by celebrities and artists such as FLETCHER on The Tonight Show, Busted Brand Latex is a Los Angeles based label aiming to push latex fashion into the “every day”. WWD recently spoke to them about their brand and choice of designs.

Part of our mission statement here at Latex24/7 is the promotion of latex fashion into the mainstream something which the article, originally from WWD, goes on to explain.

The article starts by discussing latex as a “unique and niche business” model, with a bias to costume and celebrity endorsement.  WWD then goes on to describe “the Los Angeles-based brand is challenging latex to be less fetish and more fashion”.  Founded in 2016 by head designer Mariano Cortez, Busted Brand originally started out as a streetwear brand which was influenced by underground subcultures. Its present-day formula of “everyday” latex began in 2018 whilst the founder worked for another latex designer. “Latex construction is a craft and I was taught by a very talented fetish/costume designer,” said Cortez, who now runs Busted Brand with co-owner Brya Gerard and a design assistant. “Our designs are current and we frequently style our pieces with everyday garments to make latex approachable.”

The article continues with the opinion that latex is, by nature, viewed as a “deviant” material but then does state it is also an “empowering material”. We can’t argue with that second statement! Brands such as Vex Clothing, L.A. Roxx and Dawnamatrix are quoted as the main players along with more recent luxury brands like Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Richard Quinn which have started to incorporate the material into their collections.

Busted Brand are highlighted by the point of difference being its foundation as a lifestyle brand where everyday garments such gloves, shorts, bras and crop tops have become “great introductory items for new customers to layer into existing wardrobes, especially with zip-back entrances on all tops to keep pieces functional and comfortable”.

“I think the fact that latex is a completely sanitizable material has something to do with it,” Cortez added. “People are also becoming more bold in the ways that they give voice to who they are on the inside and I believe that latex is a great material to do so through.”
