Here at Latex24/7 we like to explore the many varied possibilites which latex has to offer aside from latex fashion and clothing. One such example of this is the inclusion of latex in the world of film and we spoke recently to one creator making extensive use of latex, London based short-film director Matthias Von Braun.

Much of Matthias’ previous work has featured latex, including Emilie Lynch Williams in short Post-Human Perversions

With his previous work ‘Devoid’ being compared to the Wachowskis’ Animatrix due to the films environmental surrounding bearing more than a familiarity to the Matrix’s machine world, the award-winning creators output has also echoed Ridley Scott’s Titans in Prometheus and scores such as Blade Runner. Matthias is now back and ready to officially launch his next project, ‘Machine’. A continutation of the directors dark and surreal art film making, ‘Machine’ features dancer Melanie Whitehead Smith, a London-based dance artist with a passion for interdisciplinary work. Her practice centers predominantly around dance and recorded media. She is currently exploring the intersections between movement and film.

Speaking to us recently, Von Braun describes ‘Machine’ as “a dark surreal nightmare set deep underground in a post-human automated factory where a bio-mechanical android bursts from her artificial fetal sac. She discovers her body and rejects her sexuality.”

‘Machine’ has had a number of film festival screenings including October 21st at Obscura FilmFest at Zoo Palast in Berlin, where performer Melanie Whitehead Smith and director Matthias Von Braunc will be attending and answering questions. It has also been selected for several film festivals including the Misty Moon International Film Festival at Cinema Museum in London this October 22nd, the Secs Fest at Grand Illusion Cinema in Seattle this November 4th-6th and London Fetish Film Festival at Hen & Chickens Theatre in London this November 17th-19th.

On October 31st the film will be released to watch for free on Matthias’ YouTube channel and website and we can’t wait to see the versatility of latex being highlighted further.

Upcoming Project

Matthias also spoke to us about his upcoming project ‘Impenetrable’. Due to start production in January 2023, this will be a larger-scale short film with performers Lilith Newson and Arthur Griffiths.

With a wealth of experience Lilith Newson is a performance artist and model whose practice revolves around expression using the body, and artist personas. Over the years their body of work has consisted of live and video performances exploring self-love, trauma, non-binary identity, and glamouring. Often at the forefront of their work is an expression of sexuality, gender identity, and body politics in a contemporary context, the translation of intimacy onto digital platforms, and achieving transcendent states by means of the body. Alongside Liliths own practice, they explores the position of the muse, the abstraction of identity through modification, and how other artists’ interpretations of their body all confront us with the reality of illusion.

Through their art, Arthur Griffiths tries to create a space that allows each of us greater access to the collective spirit which permeates all experiences. By evoking honesty, communication, and raw self-expression they are an active part of the convergence between the material, ego, and the shared abstract realms of imagination and possibility. As an actor, they have worked with directors such as Sam Mendes, Danny Boyle, Steven Spielberg, and Tom Hanks. As a musician, they have recorded two albums with a third underway. As a photographer they have been published by the Guardian, and as a poet been appraised by world-renowned poet Dermot Bolger. They constantly strive to communicate truth with the external world and delve deeper into the mythical passageways of their own understanding.

Keep your eyes out for the launch of ‘Impenetrable’ by following Matthias Von Braun over on his website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube channel.
