Leave it to Doja Cat to turn a Parisian press appearance into a brilliant work of performance art. While attending the Doja Cat x MAC Cosmetics collaboration event at the Champs-Élysées Sephora in France, the style chameleon proved once again that her approach to the red carpet is entirely fearless. Stepping out onto the streets of Paris, Doja embraced a hyper-glam, doll-like aesthetic in a jaw-dropping, fully sheer cream-toned latex micro minidress from Coco Latex.

We recently spoke to founder of Coco Latex, Andrés Vásquez who was kind enough to discuss a few insights into the development process and the challenges behind the final look.

“Coco Latex have been working with Manolo from Manolo House, developing and producing a series of custom latex garments from his designs.”, Andrés tells us. “Our work involved pattern development, toile making and fittings using a fit model before moving into the final production.”

The body-hugging latex ensemble was an absolute spectacle of avant-garde fashion, featuring structured cups, exaggerated puff sleeves, and a flirty ruffled hem. But it was the standout piece of the entire ensemble which provided the dedicated team with the biggest hurdle to overcome.

“For this look, the greatest challenge was the construction of the oversized sleeves with integrated fingerless gloves. From the very beginning, we explored different approaches to achieve the desired silhouette,” the Madrid based latex designer tells us, “discussing both the internal structure and the most suitable support system. Traditional boning would have compromised the clean transparency of the natural latex, so we ultimately developed inflatable sleeves that allowed us to preserve the sculptural volume while keeping the design visually light and seamless.”

The American rapper and singer, best known for tracks including “Paint the Town Red” and “Say So”, was clearly at ease in the ensemble as the sheer material daringly showcased her matching balconette bra and thong beneath, while the bodice was adorned with built-in faux nipple piercings and bold black strap detailing that elegantly cinched the look together.

As with any outfit it’s the small details which create the perfect impact and this incredible latex creation was no different, as the owner of Coco Latex tells us.

“The look was finished with individually hand applied polka dots, delicate bows at the glove edges, a spiked trim around the neckline”, small details which complete the garment, “O ring pasties bonded directly to the dress, a matching belt, cut outs at the décolletage, and custom made white latex lingerie paired with semi transparent aqua stockings.”, clear design choices to ensure that the complete outfit was cohesive and unified, and provided Doja Cat with an unforgettable latex moment that cemented her status as a true fashion visionary.

But perhaps the most incredible part of the entire design process was the timescale in which this creation was manifested. “From the initial patterns to the final garments, the entire project was completed in just ten days.” Andrés tells us. A truly astounding timescale given the level of detail and creativity in the garment. “During that time we developed the patterns, produced the toiles, carried out the fittings and manufactured not one, but two complete looks, allowing the creative team to choose the final version for the event.”, a phenomenal and miraculous achievement.

Paying credit to the dedication, talent and commitment of the entire team, Andrés told us that projects like this would not be possible and wanted to pay special thanks to each of them in turn:

Design: Manolo House / Manolo
Latex development, pattern making and production: Coco-Latex
Styling: Brett Alan Nelson
Millinery: Maison Vivas Carrion
Worn by: Doja Cat
Event: MAC Paris

So was the effort and short timescales all worth it? Andrés definitely thinks so.

“Although this was not our first celebrity commission, it was undoubtedly one of the most technically demanding projects we have undertaken to date. Seeing the final result and the response it received has been incredibly rewarding.”

We couldn’t agree more!
