Harri KS Launches new collection at London Fashion Week

Still riding the wave from a divisive latex outfit created for Sam Smith to wear at this years Brit Awards, designer Harri launched his new Autumn-Winter 2023 latex collection at London Fashion Week yesterday.

Renowned for his inflatable latex trousers, Harri, whose full name is Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai first caught the attention of the British Fashion Council (BFC) back in 2020 when he presented his London College of Fashion graduating collection just weeks before the globe fell into lockdown, and his gravity-defying inflatable latex trousers helped him get shortlisted for the BFC’s NEWGEN initiative.

Taking place at the Newgen Catwalk Space in The Old Selfridges Hotel, London, in many cases the new releases were a more “toned-down” collection than we have seen before. Yes, the inflatable latex trousers were eminently present, as were the highly choreographed sequences as models walked the display arena, but for this launch Harri has been careful to promote cleaner lines, a more fashionable approach and to incorporate latex into other garments and accessories within the collection (latex tie anyone?)

The show notes for the launch describe that “Harri journeyed into a tactile exploration between the boundaries of wearable art and garments. This collection represents a turning point where the concept of performance is disseminated, collaging layers of culture, craftsmanship and identity into the fabrication of a newly refined and accessible silhouette.”

The colour palette for his AW23 echoed that of previous collections which highlighted orange hues and green stripes but with the addition of bold reds and greens, and which were paired with more wearable garments such as crisp white shirts with black ties and bright bomber jackets. The garments were all manufactured from UK based Supatex. The designers store page at APOC clearly shows a desire to provide both “larger-than-life” garments along with traditionally cut trousers, vests and tops.
